On June 5th 2019, Official news outlets across the internet were ablaze with stories about how Peter Byrne had contacted the FBI back in the mid-1970's to ask them to analyze some hairs and tissue that were found in the Pacific Northwest and potentially belonged to a Bigfoot type creature - it took them more than 40 years to give him a response. Here is the story in Peter's words:
When the FBI comes after you it is time to run for cover. Fast. Unless of course their pursuit is going to be benign, which it was in my case. In 1976, four men had two sets of Bigfoot sightings over two days in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Hearing of the incidents, I made immediate contact with two of the eye-witnesses, who kindly took me to the place of the incidents. There I found huge, 14 inch, five-toed footprints - to me obviously of a Bigfoot - and also, after some diligent searching, hair and tissue snagged on a tree where the creature had walked. I gathered seventeen strands of the hair and a small piece of the tissue to which they were attached and put them in a sealed plastic bag. Then, searching around for some person or foundation which might analyze them for me, I contacted the FBI, a staff member of which very kindly answered my letter of inquiry about a testing with a note saying they would be happy to do one for me. I sent the sample to them immediately and settled down to wait for them to get back to me and tell me what they found in the sample.
It was what we might call a longish wait... forty-three years, to be precise, via a letter in 2019 from FBI Assistant Director Jay Cochran, which stated "The hairs which you recently delivered to the FBI laboratory, on behalf of the BIGFOOT INFORMATION CENTER, have been examined by transmitted and incident light microscopy. The examination included a study of the morphological characteristics such as root structure, medullary structure and cuticle thickness in addition to scale casts. Also the hairs were compared directly with hairs of known origin under a comparative microscope. It was concluded, as a result of these examinations, that the hairs are of deer family origin."
The FBI were very helpful, giving me their time as they did. But why the long delay? My guess is that my sample got put in a drawer somewhere in their vast complex of offices in Langley, VA, and simply forgotten. I can only hope that if we have a murder up the street here next week and the FBI takes the case, that we will not have to wait forty-three years for results!
